UNDERSTANDING
TBI.

A traumatic brain injury can happen in a moment. Understanding what it is — and what it does — is the first step toward prevention.

What Is a TBI?

THE BRAIN IS THE
MOST VITAL ORGAN YOU OWN.

A traumatic brain injury — or TBI — occurs when a sudden trauma disrupts normal brain function. It can happen from a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. It can be mild. It can be life-altering. And it can happen in an instant.

TBIs don't always look like what you see in movies. Many people walk away from the moment of impact — only to face weeks, months, or years of invisible consequences.

NOT ALL INJURIES
LOOK THE SAME.

🟡

Mild TBI / Concussion

Temporary disruption of brain function. Symptoms include headache, confusion, memory issues, and sensitivity to light. Often invisible — and often underestimated.

🟠

Moderate TBI

Loss of consciousness, extended confusion, and neurological symptoms. May require hospitalization, imaging, and weeks of recovery with lasting effects.

🔴

Severe TBI

Extended unconsciousness, significant brain damage, and long-term disability. Can affect speech, movement, memory, personality, and independence.

🧠

Frontal Lobe Injury

The frontal lobe controls personality, decision-making, and executive function. Damage here can change who someone is — quietly, invisibly, and permanently.

What Recovery Looks Like

IT'S NOT
A STRAIGHT LINE.

Recovery from a TBI rarely follows a predictable path. Progress happens — and then stalls. Good days are followed by hard ones. The journey involves not just the person with the injury, but everyone who loves them.

"The rest of his body remained relatively unscathed — meaning a helmet would have been the difference between a scary afternoon and a life completely interrupted."
